A good water filtration system is the first line of defence in your home from the chemicals and pollutants of modern city life. Making the vital choice between filtration systems can be a massive headache – the deluge of technical terms, customisation options, and potentially indispensable features make for a tough decision.
Fortunately, the eggheads at Hydroflux are here to condense and simplify the mountain of information available on the internet. For reference, we will be exploring the Hydroflux water filtration systems as an industrial standard. While this article is by no means exhaustive, it will give you a good grasp of what to look for in a water filtration system – and why Hydroflux will tick every one off your list!
4-Stage Filtration System
Stage 1: Sediment Filter
The first step of the process is the most basic, but no less crucial. A coarse filter of natural fibres traps large particles – such as rust, grit, and sand – from the source water. This step is important for extending the working life of the other filters, since large particles will rapidly clog up their smaller pores and slow the flow of water.
You’ll be glad to know that even with such a basic component, Hydroflux uses a Japanese-branded, Korean-manufactured filter known for strict quality control and adherence to regulation.
Stage 2: Pre-Carbon Filter
This second step is where the bulk of chemicals in your water is absorbed. Depending on the company’s design, either activated carbon granules or an activated carbon block can be used. The water flows over the large exposed surface area of the carbon, allowing the carbon to adsorb harmful chemicals in the water, such as chlorine compounds and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Here, Hydroflux offers either an activated carbon powder filter – finer and more effective than granules – or a compressed carbon block filter, depending on the model of your choice. Both filters are manufactured by Kuraray – a leading producer of carbon filters from Japan – and use carbon made only from coconut husks, a definite plus for the environmentally conscious!
Stage 3: Nano Filtration Membrane
The third step of filtration removes the finest of particles and bacteria. Either synthetic or modified natural fibres are used in this filter.
As the sole distributor in Singapore of the patented NanoFACT filter, Hydroflux has an uncontested edge at this step of filtration. Designed and manufactured by KX Technologies, USA, the NanoFACT filter has one of the finest filtration standards on the market. While ultrafiltration membranes only trap particles between 0.5 – 1 micrometres, the NanoFact filter boasts an incredibly fine pore rating of 0.001 micrometres. For comparison, the Escherichia Coli or E. Coli bacterium, which can cause food poisoning and pneumonia, is 0.5 micrometres wide, while the similarly dreaded salmonella bacterium is at least 0.7 micrometres wide – both well within the NanoFact filter’s ability.
This industry-disrupting ability is thanks to KX Technologies’ proprietary method of producing highly fibrillated – or finely branching – fibres. The small tendrils overlap and form a vast number of tiny pores that not only trap fine particles, but also allow water to flow efficiently. Besides eliminating microorganisms without harmful chemicals, the special fibre is also able to hold finer grades of activated carbon and remove harmful chemicals more thoroughly.
Stage 4: Alkaline Filter / Post-Carbon Filter
The final step of filtration comes in two options. An alkaline filter alkalises your water with magnesium, increasing its pH level and imbuing it with the potential benefits of alkaline water – a whole other topic of discussion. The post-carbon filter, on the other hand, serves the humble but nevertheless useful function of absorbing any trace chemicals that made it past the other filters.
Hydroflux’s systems offer a Korean-manufactured alkaline filter or a post-carbon filter from Kuraray. While the former is self-explanatory, the latter might confuse some. After all, why would anyone need two sets of carbon filters?
Well, simply put, a pre-carbon filter is bulkier and contains more carbon. It is the primary means for removing chemicals and processes a higher volume of water. By comparison, the post-carbon filter is smaller, and only serves the auxiliary purpose of absorbing trace chemicals – both in normal operation and if the pre-carbon filter loses efficient closer to its replacement date.
Form Follows Function
Now that you know about the guts of our systems, here’s what they look like with bells, whistles, and a coat of paint.
The most compact of Hydroflux’s water dispensing systems also gives you the most bang for your buck. To achieve its economy of size, the H-2300 dispenser gets by with just two filters – a single 3-in-1 carbon powder filter from Kuraray, Japan that purifies water from Stages 1 – 2 and alkalises your water (Stage 4), and a NanoFACT filter for Stage 3 filtration.
Hot and cold water are available in 5 levels, from a chilly 4°C for scorching hot days to a useful 87°C for an instant warm drink. For safety, a lock button must be pressed before dispensing hot water. Dispense as much water as you need, or take advantage of the pre-set quantity control button of 120ml (half a cup), 550ml (average bottle), and 1500ml (large bottle). Worry not about power trips or electric fires, since the H-2300 includes an automatic temperature sensor that prevents overheating.
Coming in three attractive metallic colours (to match your iPhone, maybe), the H-2300 is the only model with an automated UV disinfection feature that disinfects the dispenser outlet against backsplash every hour of the day. For the budget-conscious but stylish homeowner, the H-2300 is a no-brainer.
This utilitarian white-coloured dispenser is Hydroflux’s basic dispensing system with a tank. While about 60% larger than the tankless H-2300, the H-1675S holds a nifty 2 and 4 litres of hot and cold water respectively and offers two separate nozzles for hot and cold water. The high volume of water demands the use of four dedicated filters for each stage of the filtration process. Stages 1 – 3 employ a full sediment filter, a pre-carbon filter, and a NanoFact filter, while Stage 4 has the options of an alkaline filter or a post-carbon filter.
Suitable for offices and medium to large households, the H-1675S comes with the same safety features as Hydroflux’s other models, as well as the H-750’s ECO Mode. An additional constant dispense function can be useful when dispensing large amounts of water, but the one-handed push-type faucets are perfectly adequate for normal use.
Hydroflux’s fancier dispensing system with a tank, the H-850/H-850S comes in a modern orange, blue or black. The H-850 is the floor-standing version of the dispenser and comes up to 1.1 metres tall. For those with more counter space, the H-850S has the same dimensions as the H-1675S and similar tank capacity. Water filtration is standard, with four dedicated filters and a choice of an alkaline or post-carbon filter.
Though the same size, the H-850S is far more aesthetically pleasing. Two sleek metallic nozzles lead down from the dispensing unit’s face, sensibly labelled with a narrow red or blue line for the hot and cold-water dispenser. A push lever behind each dispenser allows for one-handed water dispensing, although the hot water nozzle requires you to push an additional safety lock button situated on the nozzle itself. Both nozzles offer a discreet, replaceable hygiene guard that minimise splashback and allow convenient servicing on a regular basis. ECO Mode is also included.
This dispensing system is Hydroflux’s offering for professional settings like boardrooms and showrooms, and comes in a clean white with a black dispensing cavity. The H-2200’s larger water tanks hold 3 and 4.3 litres for hot and cold water respectively, allowing employees and customers to consume water without easily running out. The dispenser is a floor-stand type and comes up to 1.2 metres tall.
The H-2200 has all the bells and whistles of Hydroflux’s other dispensers, from safety features to filtration systems. While it does lack the ECO Mode function, it could easily be switched off at the end of the work day instead.
This compact filtration system is perfect for homeowners who wish to filter their tap water in addition to having a water dispenser. About the size of two shoe boxes put together, the undersink filtration system is installed beneath your sink and requires no power. The full arsenal of four dedicated filters are used to ensure that clean, chemical-free water emerges from your tap, whether for a pot of soup or to wash fruits and vegetables.
